Dreams and Reflections
Jason McLean, Tiko Kerr, Kriss Munsya, Montserrat Duran Muntadas, Trinidad Barros
May 1 - May 28, 2022 | Mackenzie Heights
Mónica Reyes Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of “Dreams and Reflections” a group show including works by Jason McLean, Tiko Kerr, Kriss Munsya, Montserrat Duran Muntadas and Trinidad Barros. The exhibition brings together works that reflect - whether they are physically reflecting their own materiality, conceptually reflecting on the past or reflecting and mirroring our own images as we step forward to get a closer look. By engaging with multiple layers of reflections, we create relationships between the artworks and ourselves, between ourselves and the space and between ourselves and the dialogue the included artists are evoking.
We become part of an intersecting community centering the experience of art, which carries the weight of our past, finds lightness in our present and opens up possibilities and dreams for a community-oriented future. As a newcomer to the Mackenzie Heights neighbourhood, Mónica Reyes Gallery reflects on the physical and conceptual space the gallery occupies in Vancouver, with hopes of becoming a community hub where engaging through art can encourage dreams for our collective future.

About Jason McLean
Brooklyn based Canadian artist, Jason McLean, creates autobiographical imagery, through scavenged objects, and memory mapping. Jason McLean’s diverse art practice includes sculpture, sound works, zines, book works, mixed-media installations, correspondence art, curatorial explorations, puppets, and performance, but he is probably best known for his diaristic mapping and surreal drawings. Inspirations fueling his daily observations are relationships with local and visited environments. His works are often described as mental maps, where samplings of his daily observations are mashed-up into antiheroic, yet poignant combinations. Grounded in family life as Husband and Father, McLean works by using humour to touch upon challenging subject matter, such as sadness, loss, displacement, and economic hardship.
Jason McLean was born in London, ON in 1971. After attending H.B. Beal Secondary School, McLean graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, Vancouver in 1997. He has exhibited nationally and internationally including shows at The National Gallery of Canada, The Vancouver Art Gallery, Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Loyal Gallery in Malmo Sweden, Richard Heller Gallery in Santa Monica, Franklin Parrish Gallery and Zieher Smith Gallery in New York City. He has work in major collections throughout North America including the Museum of Modern Art, Vancouver Art Gallery, Bank of Montreal Collection and the Royal Bank of Canada. McLean is represented by Michael Gibson Gallery in London, Canada and Wilding Cran Gallery in Los Angeles, CA.

About Kriss Munsya
Born in DRC in the 80’s and raised in Brussels, he was confronted with his “differences” early on. The discrimination and violence he experienced in child-hood left a mark - one that grew to obfuscate his sense of self-worth. The internalization of these experiences disoriented him in search of self-preservation. It took him years to acknowledge how this distanced him from his loved ones, community, and Self. He took refuge in the distance. Safety was his priority. In his adulthood, his memories are calling on him to clarify his worth and reorient his efforts toward justice. He wants to get back to those he’d distanced himself from.
